This course is for Trades people who work in sectors of the construction industry who wish to be introduced to the knowledge and skills to install both hi wall and ducted heat pump/air-conditioners.

3 days involving theory learning, practical hand-on skills and a full installation of a system of your choice (ducted or hi-wall) plus commissioning.
This course is designed to equip you with the best-practice skills, and the technical knowledge for a typical heat pump A/C split system installation. Note: different brands of systems have their own particular nuances and this course is not specific to a particular brand.
This course may challenge you, but come prepared to step up – the value of these skills will prove themselves.
We cover:
- Introduction to HVAC + Refrigeration safety incl. refrigerant safe handling
- Basic HVAC+R theory, the science of the cycle
- Equipment selection, unit positioning, noise mitigation, drainage, and how to handle defrost
- NZ Standards and the Refrigeration Code of Practice
- Moisture controls and relative humidity
- Pipe work and jointing, bending, pressure testing, leak testing & pipework insulation
- Specialised refrigeration equipment and tools – skilled use and how to look after them
- Purge brazing skills (OFDN)
- Specific ducted system design, sizing, setup and air-balancing
- Ducting components, vents and installation
- Installation pitfalls – how to avoid failures and call backs
- Electrical hazards and limits
- Practical installation of an entire ducted or hi-wall system
- Pre-start and start-up commissioning
- Effective handover to operators/owners
- AC maintenance requirements
Hands on assistance from tutor at all times. A record of learning certificate will be issued on completion of the course.
Prerequisites
An EWRB certification is an advantage but not a strict prerequisite. However, if you do not have this there will be aspects of the electrical practical which you will observe only. Bring your refrigeration specific equipment and hand tools along. PPE required – Safety boots, gloves and safety glasses. Notes: This course is designed to give you skills and knowledge in the best-practice for installation and is not specific to a particular brand. This course is in no way able to replace the comprehensive knowledge gained in a full Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Apprenticeship. All equipment and consumables, lunch, snacks and drinks are provided each day.
